Atlanta's Popular Holiday Traditions
You'll find quite a few special holiday activities and customs that take place within the Atlanta area throughout the holiday season. Quite a few of them are geared for families to enjoy. Here are some of Atlanta's treasured holiday traditions.
The Children's Christmas Parade has been an Atlanta holiday tradition for 30 years. The parade draws an estimated 300,000 visitors and is the biggest Christmas parade in the Southeast. This year the parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 from 10:30am to 12pm. The 1.5 mile parade course begins downtown on Peachtree Street near the intersection of Baker Street. The route runs along Peachtree Street, Marietta Street, and ends on Centennial Olympic Park Drive. Spectators will see marching bands, dance groups, clowns, holiday created floats, and giant helium balloons. The grand finale will be Santa Claus and his reindeer. The parade raises funds for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, helping to fund programs and equipment. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is 1 of the largest non-profit clinical care providers for kids in the country.
Centennial Olympic Park, a popular twenty one-acre park in downtown Atlanta, becomes a wonderland of Christmas lights and arrangements throughout the holiday season. Visitors could appreciate visiting Atlanta's only outdoor ice skating rink located at the park. The rink is open from November 19 to January 30, 2011. Skaters can appreciate gliding around the ice to the sounds of holiday music. A ninety-minute session costs only $7, and rental ice skates are available for $2.
The "Lighting of Atlantic Station" in midtown Atlanta will take place on November 20 at 7:30pm. Over 250,000 lights will illuminate the 8 block area. Preceding the lighting there is going to be children's activities, musical enjoyment, and a visit from Santa. Young visitors will enjoy riding the Steel Mill Express Children's Train each and every weekend from November 20 to December 19. Artisans will display hand made items for sale within the open air "Holiday Shops". Visitors to Atlantic Station will enjoy realistic snowfall around the Grand Christmas Tree Monday through Thursday at 7:30pm, hourly on Friday and Saturday nights from 6-9pm, and Sundays until 6pm.
