Botox: Not Just a Cosmetic Procedure

Botox injections have become a common household procedure among American adults who seek to instill the look of youth, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, forehead and neck. For some patients, however, Botox is providing the relief needed from pain associated with back injury, migraine headaches and even in relieving complications associated with sweating.

With medical research continuing, many pain management specialists are turning to Botox as an alternative approach to pain management, often replacing the need for surgery.

With migraine pain resulting in a significant number of individuals missing time away from work and school, coupled with the exorbitant medical costs, Botox is one pain relief measure many healthcare professionals are considering as an alternative to costly prescription medications. With injections placed into specific areas of the forehead, many migraine sufferers report a significant decrease in the frequency and severity of migraine pain and also note, when suffering from a migraine, that vomiting episodes are much less frequent. In summary, these medical findings suggest that low doses of Botox, in eight regular injections, can reduce the frequency of migraine pain for up to three months; quite a financial savings over missed work and use of prescription drugs.

Another area of concern for many adults is the profuse sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, which affects nearly one percent of the adults in the United States. With Botox injections, many of these adults, suffering from profuse sweating, notice a significant decrease in the amount of sweat released from the sweat glands. Placed into the area where sweating is most common, in the underarms, palms, genitalia and even around the forehead, sufferers commonly notice improvement in the sweat mechanism almost immediately, lasting over 12 months.

And, finally, Botox is becoming increasingly common in the treatment of minor back pain. When injected into the area where back pain is common, the muscles are weakened, resulting in a delay or decrease in muscle spasms. As a result, the pain associated with back muscle spasms is reduced.

While the use of Botox for back pain is not common, it is performed in some pain management programs in an effort to avoid surgery and promote rehabilitation.

As with any pain management procedure, finding methods in which to improve overall health while reducing pain, is key to improving productivity. Once considered a cosmetic procedure, Botox is quickly making its way into the medical scene as an alternative pain management tool.
