Chick House and its Dimensions

by Paul J. Easton

When you are designing your chick coop, the dimensions are very important. To determine this, you should know how many chicks you are projecting to raise at one time. This is significant as you don't desire your chicks to be overcrowded inside the chicken house. When you chicks are crammed together in a small area, they can spread sickness quickly because it is not sanitary. Like an infant, chicks demand the extra care as they are more vulnerable to sickness than a full grown chicken.

You will likewise need to add a space for incubation when you program on increasing your chicks the eggs produced. So include this in the dimensions. The incubation space must be separate from the area where the older chicks will be kept. You might as well desire to have a different door for the incubator space so that you do not disturb the other chicks while in the hatching phase. This space must also be large enough to accommodate the equipment and you should have space to move around easily so that you do not get cramped while following the hatching process.

You will need to consider the part for the run for the older chicks too. If the chicks are young, they will have a temporary feathers that be later replaced with full feathers. Expect this when the chicks reach the age of six to eight weeks old. When this occurs, you can have the older chicks range freely outdoors in the run to take some fresh air. You want to have a run that will be sufficiently spacious for the number of chicks you have. They can later be then moved to the main chicken house to make room for more hatchlings. Insure the chicks are protected if in the run area by planting your chicken wires into the ground. This will prevent predators from getting your chicks.

Once you have finalized the correct chick coop dimensions for your project, you can commence building the chick coop. With all these considerations for the dimensions of your chick coop, you can expect to have more success with your chickens.
