Homeowners looking to boost the curb appeal of their homes are turning in greater numbers to concrete driveways. This is little surprise: Concrete driveways are durable, attractive and stain-resistant. They're also affordable.

More homeowners are recognizing that concrete driveways are a great way to add to the visual appeal of their residences. And while most homeowners prefer the standard grey finish, today's concrete driveways come in a wide array of decorative finishes.

Though ordering a new driveway is largely a simple process, homeowners just do some research before making their final decisions. Homeowners can start this homework by first considering the existing look and feel of their residences. They can then choose a driveway look that complements rather than contrasts with their home's style and landscaping.

The process of redesigning an existing concrete driveway is a fairly simple one. Contractors basically add decorative elements to a driveway's top layer, usually by adding a thin new layer of concrete to the driveway's existing base, staining the driveway a new shade or cutting new designs into its surface level.

The good news for homeowners who already have a poured concrete driveway and are looking to add a decorative finish, is that there are many designs available to them. One popular technique is known as concrete staining. In this method, sections of the driveway are marked off and stained complementary colors, giving the driveway an inlaid stone effect.

Contractors can also add saw-cut patterns to a driveway. As the name of this technique suggests, workers do this by sawing lines into a driveway's surface. Most homeowners choose to go with geometric shapes such as squares and rectangles when choosing this saw-cut method.

There are even more options for homeowners ordering a new poured-concrete driveway. For instance, to replicate the look of a brick or stone driveway, homeowners can have their driveway stamped, giving it the look of inlaid stone. They can also choose to have their driveway colored or stained. This technique also creates the look of clean stone. Contractors can also engrave concrete or give it a textured finish. This is done when workers add pebbles, stones, or salt to the top layer.

Decorative concrete techniques are a relatively inexpensive and eye-catching way to add curb appeal and value to a home. Like all driveways, though, concrete versions can suffer cracks. The good news is that repairing a concrete driveway is much like repairing a sidewalk. Workers will cut away the crack and clean the area surrounding it. They will then add new concrete mix to the crack.

Adding or renovating a concrete driveway is a great way for homeowners to breath some new life into their properties. The right driveway, which homeowners can create with just a little research, can add greatly to the enjoyment they get out of their homes.
