Ferrets Make Great Pets
Ferrets make great pets and you should investigate ferrets if you are looking to get a pet but do not want a fish, cat or dog. Ferrets are popular because they show affection, love to play and can easily show when they are happy. When a ferret is active and having fun it can easily double as entertainment as ferrets are great at doing stunts. Ferrets do not like to be held for a long time so if you want a nice cuddly pet I would suggest getting a kitten.
A ferret will want to constantly be doing what you are doing; but they tend to sleep during the day and are more active at dusk or dawn. They think that hiding things is funny and they will soon have their own collection of miscellaneous items, including keys, socks and other small items. Most ferrets will never bite unless they are hurt, and you will discover your ferret in many odd places as they like to take a nap at all times in unusual spaces.
Ferrets are very quiet and they can be caged, since you do not want one wandering around your home all the time, they tend to try to be underfoot. Also a ferret will not get lonely as they tend to become devoted to one person throughout their life. If you're not going to be home too much, it's a good idea to get two of the little guys. A ferret likes to be comfortable and will not need any special products or items to feel at home. The ferret will need fresh water, food, a snug nest of snag free blankets to sleep in, and of course, a litter box. If your ferret is caged then they will need to be let out for an hour or two to exercise every day.
Your ferret's diet needs to be low in fiber, high in protein and because they are so high in energy. There are specially formulated ferret foods available at pet stores that should be used- never feed cat food! As with any animal your ferret may prefer a specific type of food and you may have difficulties changing brands. In order to make sure your ferret doesn't become accustomed to one brand make sure you mix several brands and flavors. Sometimes certain flavors may become unavailable and if that is the only one your ferret will eat then you will have a problem.
Ferrets are not very expensive to have as a pet. One of the largest costs is in the initial purchase as you will need to obtain the ferret from a breeder. Of course we recommend you check out your local ferret rescue before picking up your new friend. They may have just the one love need a special home.
Ferrets may need to be spayed or neutered and this can also be expensive but only needs to be don once. You need to make sure it is legal for you to have a ferret as a pet as some states do not allow this.
