Finding Just The Right Furniture
Whether you are moving into a new home, or just giving your current living room an uplift, it's important to give some serious thought to the way you want the room to look and feel. The way you choose to design and decorate a room can have a dramatic impact on the way the room feels and how it is used.
If you are giving the room a complete makeover and going for a whole new look you will want to decide what style you want for that room. Of course you'll want to make sure it blends with the furnishings and feel of the rest of the house. But maybe you want to move to a slightly more modern look, or more of a traditional look, or something else.
If you are planning on buying new furniture you should be able to easily find the style you want. There is such a wide selection available it may seem overwhelming at first but once you narrow it down to the look you like you'll be able to browse through all the options more quickly. You may even consider shopping online, or browsing online then finding the item at a store near you.
If you aren't able to get all new furniture you'll need to consider other options. If you're current furniture is still structurally sound you may want to refurbish it to give it new life and a new look. If you're brave or skilled enough to tackle the job yourself you can get just the look you want and give the room a personal feel. If not you might consider finding someone in your area to do the work for you.
Another good option if you're on a budget is to find second hand furniture, or look for close out deals or store closing sales. If you're willing to spend the time you can find some great deals on gently used furniture at garage sales, in classified ads, online or local postings. It may take a little more patience but you might be surprised at what you can find.
It's important to evaluate the shape and size of the room you are decorating before you start shopping for furniture so you know what to look for. You don't want to put small furniture in a large room or it will looked dwarfed and out of place.
Evaluate how the pieces will fit in each specific room you are decorating, how they will fit in relation to any doors, or other openings and areas that lead to another room. The goal is to make the room functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Consider the sizes and shapes you'll need to achieve this.
One way to make sure all the pieces you want will fit in the room is to carefully measure the areas and put something like paper or newspaper in those areas so you can feel how things will fit and know what size of furniture to look for. For instance in a living room you may want to measure an area for a couch, end tables, a coffee table and a love seat to see what will fit and how it will feel.
Now you're ready to start shopping. This is the fun part whether you're looking at new or second hand; it's still new and fresh to you.
