If you are interested in finding out about the exciting world of radio controlled boats, there are a lot of decisions to make. Where is your boat coming from, and how much cash can you devote to this hobby? What kind of boat do you want and are you going to be putting it together yourself or getting a kit?

Let's start by seeing what kind of space you have available. Do you have a large body of water near you that is weed free and calm? When you have located a good place to run your boats, this is a sign that it is definitely time to get started.

There are three major types of radio controlled boats. They are based on the way you fuel your boat to provide power. A very popular type, and certainly the easiest to get started with is the electric radio controlled boat, as you can just start their batteries in a wall charger for several hours and you are ready to go. Electric rc boats are not as powerful as the other two types of rc boats, and once there batteries are drained, you either need to replace the battery pack or wait several hours to recharge the original pack.

If you are a hobbyist with an intermediate level of experience, you may find that it is time for you to look at nitro-methane powered RC boats. These boats run on a mixture of nitrogen and methane and they can get a lot of power. The fuel for this type of boat is the most expensive, though they can be quickly and easily refueled for competitions.

Finally, we have the gasoline powered RC boat. These are both, the most powerful RC boat out there, and the fastest, and they run on a mix of gas and oil. They are not necessarily for the beginner unless you have someone to help you run them. The start up cost to get a gas powered RC boat is fairly high, but you will find that this pays for itself over time as the gasoline fuel comes in at a lower cost than the nitro-methane mix that is used for the nitro powered models. Consider what priorities you have when you are thinking about purchasing boats and which one you are interested in investing in.

Of these three options, you should think about how the shape affects the way that the boat handles. For instance, a boat that has a deep v shape to a single hull is going to give you some good maneuvering quality with only a small impact on speed.

When you are limited in terms of space or budget consider purchasing an electric RC boat. They are not nearly as powerful as the other options, but there are some models that will give you a lot of performance for the money you pay. Some models will go up to 40mph, and that's nothing to sneeze at!

If you need to run your RC boat in a residential neighborhood, it might be worth your while to purchase an electric RC boat. Nitro and gasoline boats will create a great deal of noise, and can get you fined or banned from your venue; electric boats on the other hand are very quiet.

Radio controlled boating is a great hobby to get into and is rather easy to enter. With so many choices it offers something for every person. You can enjoy building the boats, running them, or, if you really want to challenge yourself and experience it as a team sport, racing them.
