Balance is actually one of the most basic elements of interior design. And while many meanings may be associated with the term, in styling a room, this simply means a sense of all things being in their right places and in the right amounts in terms of color, pattern, shape or texture. There should be no excesses, no misplaced pieces. Everything just has to be what and where it needs to be.
There are three kinds of stability that you can discover before coming up with a decision which one works for you best. Balanced or formal will have you making a rational borderline across the room so that it's split consistently with objects on one side unavoidably present on the on the other side. Unless you learn to conduct experiment and be courageous to try dissimilar arrangements, this type of balance will be quite boring.
Asymmetrical or informal balance is something that plays around lines, forms, textures, shapes and colors without duplication. With this, you have more freedom to walk around with your design since it does not need a certain pattern or rule to be followed. You just have to consider the visual weight of your furniture. For illustration, if you have a sofa on one side, you can balance it not unavoidably with another sofa on the other side but perhaps with a couch and an ottoman.
The third type is radial balance wherein a central focal point will be established with the other furniture pieces working around it. A very common example would be a round metal table in your patio. Having chairs all around it should create the perfect balance. Also, in this type, you will be seeing a lot of repetition, whether in color, shape, texture or even in the actual furniture piece.
