Plan To Increase The Quality Of An Employee's Work Contribution

Do you ever find yourself with a struggling employee on your payroll? Here's a simple and easy way to motivate an employee and improve his or her performance.

First, sit down with the employee and discuss his or her contributions to the company; emphasize how the employee aids in the daily operation of the business. This helps the employee remember that he or she has an important place in the operation. It's easy to forget our own contributions when we do the same work in the same place every day.

Set realistic goals for the employee that, if accomplished, will improve on his or her contributions to the company. Place priority on the tasks that will help the company most in the shortest amount of time, and make sure the employee knows that these goals are the most important.

Once the employee is aware of these goals, schedule another meeting later on down the road so you can take a look at his or her performance again. Look at figures such as the quality, quantity, and efficiency of the employee's work in order to grade the changes in performance.

You should also give the employee a chance to evaluate his or her own performance. Establish a scale for rating the improvements in the employee's work; simply grading it as exceeding expectations, meeting expectations, or not meeting expectations will suffice.

One way to motivate employees is to award those who consistently exceed expectations. Raises, bonuses, and gift cards are monetary prizes that any employee will work toward, improving his or her performance at the same time.

As the employee begins to realize how his or her improved performance benefits the company, he or she will feel more valuable and will work towards better performance whether there is an award offered or not.

It's vital to take the employee's input seriously throughout the process. You'll find that an employee who has some input in setting his or her own goals will be much more likely to achieve them, and when the employee achieves these goals, he or she is helping the company greatly.
