Teach Children Science Through Learning With The Live Butterfly Garden

by Christine Pinkston

Children love to learn, especially if it is through doing. Science is a very important aspect of our life so teaching children science is important. Taking a walk with your child is a very good way to teach them about science and nature. Stop and look at the animals building their homes or the frogs changing from tadpoles to frogs.

Children love to learn and the more interesting you make it the more they will soak up. Nature as a wonderful way to teach your child about science and the live butterfly garden will do just that.

Children love the live butterfly garden because they get to experience nature first hand. With it they are able to see the life of a caterpillar and more importantly let the butterfly go after a few days.

My friend buys her nieces a live butterfly garden every year in the early spring. The girls watch them grow and then they all get together to let the butterflies go.

Her nieces have learned two things. The first is the life of a caterpillar and the second is a lesson that is very hard for kids, letting something go that you love. Aside from learning, those girls have those happy memories for the rest of their lives.

They also had a live butterfly garden at my sons preschool he was so excited about watching the caterpillars turn into butterflies that that was all he talked about for weeks.

What's a live butterfly garden?

A live butterfly garden is a kit you can buy that includes five to six caterpillar larvae surrounded by the food that they will need to grow and it comes with a mesh net.

What happens?

The children get to watch the whole process of how caterpillars turn into butterflies. It is truly amazing to kids how a caterpillar can change from something that crawls around to something beautiful that can fly. This really gets kids imaginations going.

The live butterfly garden is not the only way to teach your child about nature. It just offers a close up view of the whole process. There are many other free ways to help your child learn the wonders of science and nature.
