Do your tresses threaten to abandon you every morning, leaving bristles on your hair brush full of hair? Do you get cold feet dreading the day when your tresses might be too thin to brush through without fear? Well, it is high time you armed yourself with the knowledge about the causes of hair loss. Did you know that hair loss occurs because of some common reasons, yet few people know much about those? Here are some of the general reasons for hair loss:

  1. Hormonal imbalance: Androgens and estrogens are the male and female hormones. When they experience sudden change, their levels are thrown out of balance which is one of the major reasons for hair loss. An example of this is of a woman after child birth. High hormonal levels during pregnancy prevents hair fall, but a few months after child birth the hormonal level comes back to normal. It is not surprising that the woman will experience increased hair loss at this time.

  2. Hair care gone wrong: Chemical treatments such as permanent straightening or curling are also reasons for hair loss. Using tight rubber bands and curlers or braiding your hair too tightly will cause the hair shaft to stretch and eventually snap. Prolonged use of hair straighteners, dyes, bleaches and curlers will strip your hair of its vital nutrients and result in rough textured hair, split ends and hair fall.

  3. Some prescription drugs and medications cause hair loss as a side effect. Drugs administered during chemotherapy can also be reasons for hair loss, causing patients to lose most, or even all of their hair. When the therapy is discontinued, hair usually starts growing back.

  4. Stress and lack of proper diet also take their toll on hair. When the body lacks precious nutrients, it restricts supply of nutrients to hair follicles, thereby leading to malnourished hair. Stress also causes hormone imbalance in the body, further aggravating hair loss.

  5. Genetic factor is one of the important reasons for hair loss, something that many people fail to understand. Genetic structure of a person, which he/ she has gained from ancestors controls hormone levels in the body, and consequently, regulates hair loss.

These are the principal reasons for hair loss that occur in people. Prevention of these causes and curing of the others can prevent hair loss to a great extent. The trick is to spot the actual reason for hair loss to occur and take it out of the picture.
