Understanding Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization, also coined SEO, helps to increase the amount of visitor's to your website. All of the search engines will rank websites based on keywords and code and the higher your ranking the earlier on a consumer will view the link to your website. Search engine optimization can be applies to any website and can used for vertical searches, images searches and local searches.
When you are optimizing your website you will be altering the sites content and coding to improve its ranking within the search engine. You will be increasing the amount of keywords as well as changing the html code to stop web crawlers and other indexing programs.
There are two types of search engine optimization techniques, those that are part of a good design, also called white hat, and those that are not approved, called black hat. White hat techniques are long lasting while black hat techniques know that their site will be banned and closed quickly. White hat technique follows all of the search engine guidelines; basically the content that the indexing sees is the content that the consumer of Internet searcher will see.
Black hat techniques are deceptive. The moment these techniques are identified the website will be ejected from the search engine. Ultimately black hat techniques have a different web page indexed then what is actually presented to the consumer. Cloaking, off screen text positioning, invisible div, similarly colored text to the background and hidden text are all used to deceive the search engines indexing systems.
Search engine optimization should not be your only form of Internet marketing. While search engine optimization will increase the amount of traffic to your site it will not increase your amount of sales. You will probably need to use a combination of search engine optimization, paid advertising, and improving your sites conversion rate. Search engines change and your websites ranking can drop causing a decrease in traffic. You need other marketing avenues to be able to whether a drop in ranking.
