A life coach is a certified individual hired by someone to help him achieve personal growth and to achieve desired goals. Life coaching is a service offered to anyone who wants to maximize their potential and operate with the best skills they can.
A person may wish to improve in or be more focused in several areas. Life coaches can be qualified to advise in time management, physical fitness, motivation, direction, starting a new career, or learning to adjust to new situations.
Most sessions between a client and a life coach are held over the phone for convenience. In the beginning, coaches offer a welcome package, a survey or a free, first time assessment. This helps the potential client ensure that he is choosing a compatible life coach, and making sure coaching is the best option for him. In addition to phone sessions, email exchanges are common.
Life coaches do not strip away everything a person has worked hard for in his life. A coach's job is simply to add to it. So a client may be very successful in many areas of his life, but needs help in an area or two just to achieve more balance.
Clients' ages vary because individuals are all on different paths and in different situations. College students may need help choosing a major. Business men and women may seek advice on a career or desire to sharpen their business skills. Some are currently experiencing life changes, such as a new career or an empty nest. Even if a client knows the direction he needs to take and what ideas he would like to pursue, he needs support, a challenge, encouragement, validity, organization, or that extra push. He often needs to be held accountable to short and long term goals. These are all things a life coach is certified to help a client accomplish.
