There are several skills a pitcher must acquire in order to be a reliable starter on his team. On the other hand, a pitcher develops much of his skill set off the field. Everyday we develop certain attitudes towards everything in life. These attitudes stay with us for years and years to come. Are you a leader? Do you set and accomplish goals? Many athletes are remembered for who they are off the field, not for the records they set on it. Think about recent records set in Baseball; what did steroids do to these individuals integrity for the game of baseball? So, what makes the perfect pitcher on the field?

Smart pitchers understand and use appropriate biomechanics so their bodies can handle the workload pitching requires. Smart pitchers also have a great workout routine that is well rounded involving full body workouts and using functional fitness routines. Winning pitchers can handle the emotional stresses when the game is on the line and want the ball during sticky situations. We also know that winning pitchers care enough about their body that they would not put any fuel in it that wouldnt be necessary to allow them to complete at peak performance.

We know that these attributes make quality pitchers on the field. Throwing mechanics, functional fitness, understanding how your body works and an understanding of the mental aspects of the game; these skills make complete pitchers. I cannot stress enough importance on how being a student of the game will also help you succeed on the mound. So what makes the perfect pitcher off the field?

Understanding what happens on the field, what about off the field? We know that pitchers are leaders and know that a lot of weight is on their shoulders to pitch well week in and week out. This is an exciting challenge for winning pitchers because they actually want the ball and often request it in a sticky situation. Great pitchers have a good head on their shoulders and are well respected because they respect others. They have learned and will continue to learn life lessons as they pursue to become better people to their fans and friends.

If you are a pitcher who wants to succeed in Baseball; you should work on leadership skills and abilities. You should also try and learn as much as you possibly can about people and why they do the things they do. This will help you prepare for the mental game on the field and some crazy and adoring fans off of it. My advice is to live everyday to its fullest and thirst for the knowledge that will always give you the upper hand.
