Why Does Hair Loss Occur? The Reasons for Hair Loss

Have you ever colored your canities and trimmed off your trichoptilosis? Wondering what that is? Well, canities is the scientific name for gray hair and trichoptilosis is what is commonly known as 'split ends'. Most people are vain about their mane until faced by a serious problem. Nightmares of a receding hairline and a constantly expanding bald pate can be quite 'hair raising', needless to say, having the opposite effect. The reasons for hair loss are many and varied. Even experts in the field have divided views and theories about it. The general factors that lead to and accelerate loss of hair can be summed up as follows:

  1. Imbalance of hormones - Imbalance of male and female hormones, namely, androgen and estrogen are often reasons for hair loss in men and women. Women always lose less hair during pregnancy. This is because their bodies are flooded with female hormone estrogen. However, after childbirth, hormone levels slowly fall back to normal, making them lose much hair in the process.

  2. Hair care regimens like curling and straightening of hair also strips it of its nutrients. Even tying thick rubber bands to hold your hair in a bunch can suffocate the roots of the hair, resulting in rapid hair loss. Using hot hair curlers on the head repeatedly or braiding your hair too tight can also have the same effect.

  3. Medications and prescription drugs - Some antibiotics and other prescription drugs can increase the rate of hair fall. These include drugs for cardiac problems, hypertension, depression and arthritis.

  4. Stress and lack of proper diet also take their toll on hair. When the body lacks precious nutrients, it restricts supply of nutrients to hair follicles, thereby leading to malnourished hair. Stress also causes hormone imbalance in the body, further aggravating hair loss.

  5. Genetic factor is one of the important reasons for hair loss, something that many people fail to understand. Genetic structure of a person, which he/ she has gained from ancestors controls hormone levels in the body, and consequently, regulates hair loss.

The treatments of hair loss are as varied as the reasons themselves. The best way to combat hair loss is to find out the actual reason and work towards eliminating it.
