Why Drafting Tables Are Popular

by Bart Icles

Even though the use of different software for drafting are already available in the market today and are already being used by a lot of people, drafters still prefer using the traditional drafting tables in doing their drafting jobs. This is because they are more at home in practicing their crafts when they are using rudimentary methods that would really require manual skills and not just the click of a keyboard or the computer mouse. Also, using the traditional drafting tables is a secure way of making sure that your drafts are really yours without having to take the risk of an intellectual property lawsuit since computers may easily be hacked.

When drafting tables were invented during the Colonial period of the history of the United States, they made drawing and design a much easier thing to do since drafting tables were designed solely for that purpose. Not only are drawings and architectural designs and blueprints done on the drafting tables, writing is also a major activity using it. In earlier times, having antique drafting tables add a touch of class and sophistication to a room, not to mention that it also adds to the intellectual aura of the person living in it.

Drafting tables even during the olden times need to have one characteristic, that is, they should be fully adjustable so as to accommodate any working position, may it be standing or sitting. This is bacause drafts usually take a long time to be perfected, and long hours spent just sitting down or just standing up may be too taxing. They should be able to adjust to the needs of the draftsman. Back then, drafting tables were primarily made of wood, but nowadays, there are a wide variety of materials being used to make drafting tables, like aluminum, steel, and plastic.

If you are planning to buy a drafting table for your drawing and designing needs, you should ask yourself the following questions to be able to determine which type you should be buying:

  1. Will I be using it for a very long time?

  2. What type of paper do I usually use and what size is it?

  3. What is the most important feature of the drafting table that I need to be able to utilize?

These questions will be able to let you decide whether to get the antique types which are really heavy but are the most sturdy, or whether to get the modern types which are really adjustable and portable but not really that sturdy but suits the purpose, anyway.

Drafting tables should not be merely treated as a workplace. They should also be treated as valuable pieces of furniture that should blend with its surroundings. They can be passed on from generation to generation.
